@Abstract : Digital library has been widely accepted as an important area of research and development for creating new environment for knowledge work. This article surveys R&D activities on the digital library mainly in the United States of America. It includes research activities oriented to new information technologies such as the Digital Library Initiatives funded by NSF and other funding bodies. It also explains library-based activities which are aiming to develop practical digital library environments. The examples explained include the University of Michigan Libraries, the University of California Libraries and other related activities.

Special feature : Digital Libray. Electronic libraries initiative in the UK higher education institutions

@Abstract : Clumps and Hybrid Libraries projects are now working in eLib phase 3. Clumps aim to build virtual union catalogues by using Z39.50 protocol, and Hybrid Libraries are developing integrated service to a range of various resources in real libraries. On the other hand DNER (Distributed National Electronic Resource) is proposed by JISC. This article describes the initiative aiming at uniform access to distributed heterogeneous resources, while outlining Clumps, Hybrid Libraries, and DNER.

@Abstract :This paper introduces movements towards digital libraries among national universities in Japan with some examples reviewing steps so far.@First, we describe how Science Council and Association of National University Libraries played important roles.@Next, we introduce outlines and features of digital libraries at national universities that acquire budgets from Japanese Government and other university libraries that promote their own digital library projects. Finally, we discuss the necessity of collaboration among digital library projects.

Special feature : Digital Library. Electronic Library Projects of the National Diet Library : with respect to the Electronic Library Concept

@Abstract : This article deals with the electronic library projects of the National Diet Library, with respect to gthe electronic library concept", which had been disclosed in February, 1998. Also, it introduces the system development program for the Electronic Library Infrastructure System which will be developed by the year of the opening of the Kansai-kan (the tentative name) in 2002. Also describes on the individual electronic library systems, projects and implementation of various cooperation programs with domestic and foreign institutions.

Special feature : Digital Library. NACSIS Online Journal Project

@Abstract : The editing and the publishing systems for online journals, which are under development at NACSIS, are is to realize efficient distribution of research results, by means of supporting for academic institutions to make all the processes of producing scholarly journals electronic and online. The editing system, which is operated and used by each academic institution, is designed to be flexible enough to adapt to various editing processes and document formats. The publishing system, which is operated by NACSIS and is used for online publishing, has a powerful searching capability and provides various reading support functions. This article describes the functions and usages of the system from viewpoints of authors, editors, subscribers, etc., and explains possible introduction procedure to academic institutions.
