Abstract: Think back the history of and look forward the future perspective of information retrieval by contrasting system-centered and user-centered approaches. History of information retrieval evolved from controversy toward collaboration of these two approaches. Relevance, search process models, reduction of cost and time, as well as tackling of exploratory searching were discussed as focuses of advancement in research and development of information retrieval. Need for a new evaluation measure, dealing with the states of knowledge and uncertainty, to take over the relevance is called for.

Abstract: The author anticipates the change in society brought about by search engines in the next decades. Advances in human interface and information terminals will dramatically increase the convenience of search engines and they will strongly support human memory and decision making. Retrieval accuracy can be enhanced by keeping track of huge amounts of user behavior data. On the other hand, there is a risk that the users may incline to be passive and easily satisfied with biased and typological information.

Abstract: In this paper, we first describe problems users have while searching for information when using conventional Web search engines. Then we classify these problems into the following three categories based on their underlying reasons: problems resulting from gthe limited interaction between a search user and a Web search service,h problems due to gthe gap between a search user and an author of Web pageh and ones caused by gthe situation in which target information is not available on any single Web page in the Webh. Next, we introduce several technologies aimed to solve these problems by employing interaction techniques on Web search services, utilizing social annotations and visualizing meaningful information extracted from collected Web pages.

Abstract: The growth of the internet and the decrease of the storage costs are resulting in the rapid increase of multimedia contents today. Spoken Document Retrieval (SDR) is a promising technology for enhancing the utility of such data. In this paper, the trends and the challenges for SDR are discussed. Firstly, the problem definition of SDR and the two sub-tasks for SDR, namely spoken term detection (STD) and spoken content retrieval (SCR) are introduced. Then, the several technological challenges for SDR are shown with their related works. Finally, the currently available test collections for SDR are presented, which are indispensable for evaluating SDR technologies. Especially, the NTCIR SpokenDoc task, which is currently conducted for evaluating both STD and SCR tasks, is introduced.

Abstract: With the growth of social media such as blog, Facebook and Twitter, we can acquire information through word of mouth on social networks. Such information acquisition via social networks is passive relative to information search by Web search engines. However, we can acquire personalized information effectively by proper choice of neighbor users who become important information sources or their mediators. In this article, I discuss the significance and role of the connections between users for information exploration. Furthermore, I analyze the difference of services.
