Abstract: Authority control is considered to be essential devise continuously on recent discussion about future framework of bibliographic control. On the other hand, "ontology" is considered to be important technical layer of "Semantic Web". In this article, Firstly, I review recent topics related to authority control (discussion toward future framework, name authorities, subject authorities and controlled vocabulary). Secondly, I review ontology and Linked Open Data mainly from the viewpoint of bibliographic control on library community.

Abstract: In this article, I overview the systems of identifying and organizing information on the web. Firstly I introduce the systems of identifiers on the web. It requires assurance of identification on web which is ensured by adopting URI and providing information for identifiers which is realized by various methods. Secondly I show the system of concepts as the method of organizing information, which includes vocabulary, controlled vocabulary, taxonomy, thesaurus, and ontology. As controlled vocabulary, I introduce authority files many of which are recently published as LOD. As taxonomy, I explain biological classifications which are to publish on the web. Ontology which is the most organized system is now applying some domains, in particular biology. I show gene ontology as an example of ontology.

Author databases and identifiers on the web

Kei KURAKAWA

Abstract: The name authorities for authors increasingly become important for scholarly communications since a variety of information have been spreading over the web. Author databases and its identifiers have been open in a public. This article focuses on these author databases and identifiers, and surveys them. At first, types of author databases are definitively described. Then, it is explained that these author databases are in a public on the web, and author identifiers have linkages among them, and accuracy of the linkage will be leveraged by author community. Further, the position of author databases is clarified by referencing general people searches. Finally, this article states the importance of author databases and identifiers for future scholarly communication infrastructure.

Abstract: The National Diet Library (NDL) has applied the Semantic Web technology to the distribution of bibliographic data in order to improve its openness and availability on the Web environment. At the first step, NDL released "Web version of National Diet Library Subject Heading (Web NDLSH)" in June 2010, and then "Web NDL Authorities(BETA)" in July 2011, which expanded the range of offering data to all authority records and the functions. Web NDL Authorities(BETA) provides authority data in the form suited to the Semantic Web technology, i.e. in RDF model and Linked Data schemes. This paper explains the brief introduction of this service, the contents of authority data, the design of RDF model, and so on.

Information of the authority and the classification in the Japanese classic books

Mitsuru AIDA

Abstract: National Institute of Japanese Literature has a lot of early Japanese books. However, it has been a long subject to realize to search a classification and the theme for them as a key. It is because we realized computer search very early and had been building the "Japanese Classics Comprehensive Catalogue" database, as a "National Union Catalog". Therefore, we are continuing having the concern about a classification. Although distance is far, and maintenance of an infrastructure is little-by-little because of the realization, it is progressing. I introduce the end of the measure.

Abstract: When you examine the country's patent has not been included in commercial databases that are available, such as the site will be using patent offices. However, websites and never used, and or even a non-English speaking countries, and find ways, often do not even know I think that what information is included. In this paper, who is also featured on the website of the non-English speaking Brazilian Patent Office, and entry instructions for accessing patent information search, find ways to introduce. Brazilian Patent Office web site because it is expressed by the Portuguese, has been described by many a figure.

Abstract: Reaxys is a web-based search and retrieval system for chemical compounds, bibliographic data and chemical reactions. It provides access to millions of chemical structures, reactions and properties information in organic, inorganic and organometalic chemistry. Reaxys' workflow interface was carefully designed to reflect how chemists think and work. The Reaxys' features are well accepted and Reaxys are already used by researchers in many companies.
Reaxys has been making functional improvements as well as increase of contents. In this article, improvement of search function, additional display items, new features of synthesis planner and Application Programming Interface (API) are discussed.
