Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present an overview of: 1) the concept of strategic management, 2) four major theories of business management and library management, and 3) the uniqueness of library management. First, we explain that these theories of strategic management include all areas related to organization and environment, creating a new synergy. Second, we look at how librarians often failed to properly implement the strategic planning into their management. Librarians, however, did show a preference for theories of management based on organization, particularly the theory of core competence for its gradual changes, over those theories based on market and external environment. Finally, we describe the frame of reference regarding theories of strategic management for libraries.
