Abstract: Total thinking for IP Information Analysis is outlined. A brief historical trend of IP Information Analysis is described at first. The making of the patent map is really often misunderstood by persons who are not familiar to the business of the patent analysis. The solutions for many themes in really making of patent map are explained concretely. For instances, how to plot key words concerned with aspects for a X-axis and a Y-axis respectively is commented. As a basic knowledge, a process of seven steps for IP Information Analysis, a model of three steps jump for making of patent maps, and expected ideal patent maps, are explained by use of Figures. At last, expected functions for making of IP patent maps are described in a table.

Mitsui building, 1-105 Kanda Jinbocho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 101-8101 JAPAN

Abstract: As has been repeatedly pointed out, effective use of patent information is required to formulate R&D policies. Various analytical tools and methods (e.g., patent map analysis) have been proposed regarding the effective use of patent information in the intellectual property field. It was against this background that the PAT-LIST Research Forum/Workshop (supported by Raytec Co., Ltd.) was established in 2006. With the forum/workshop having now entered its fifth year, the personnel of various companies who are in charge of intellectual property management and R&D have studied how to analyze patent information through the activities of the forum/workshop. In this article, I will discuss patent information analysis methods that are effective in setting R&D targets in view of these activities.

5-16-1 Ohmiya, Asahi-ku, Osaka 535-8585 JAPAN

Abstract: This paper concerns 13 tools for patent analysis classified into four types. For each of these 13 tools, the providing company, kinds of data which the tool can handle, the characteristics, volume of data that can be treated, and the price is stated. The most important things when we analyze patent information are to determine the aim and the quality of the original data. If the data is provided by reliable databases, the accompanying capability for analyses can be very useful. Where the analyzing capability doesn't prove useful, it is beneficial for us to have one more tool which can handle the versatile CSV data.

Abstract: Patent map is visualizing patent information through searching, classifying, analyzing process, and it's an indispensable tool for R & D strategy and patent strategy planning. Now many commercial patent map generating software including statistical approach and text mining approach are sold, however it's possible for us to generate patent map using MS Excel already installed on the computer. This article describes the following three points; 1. Overview of Pivot table which is cross tabulation function of MS Excel, 2. How to generate bubble chart which is difficult to make, 3. Graph visualization of patent map are described.
