Abstract: This article provides the topic to discuss the common feature and differences between "Search" which is the context of the information professionals and the "Enterprise Search". Chapter 2 provides the current state of "Entereprise Search" by explaining a present "Search and Discovery Software" market, and showing the list of the forum that relates to the "Enterprises Search" held in the last year. From Chapter 3 to Chapter5 sketches out the elements of the "Enterprise Search", the "Internet Search for Consumer" and the "Desktop Search". Chapter 6 describes the "Enterprise Search" in detail. Finally, Chapter 7 touches about what we learn from the Enterprise Search.

The Enterprise Search in its Emerging Age

Shigeru MIHARA, Mari TAKABA
FAST A Microsoft Subsidiary

Abstract: "Search" is now becoming a behavior pattern as well as Read and Write. The use of Search can be various such as for internet search, e-Commerce and intranet search and it would therefore vary in their required conditions, too. On the other hand, Search can be seen as stereotyped image such Keyword Search, simply showing the list of search results based on the keyword the user types in. FAST introduces a variety of enterprise search solutions that search is placed as an information access platform where we would be free from its stereotype and search performs its own value to connect people, item and data. FAST also explains the key points for enterprise search to contribute to the business value and its productivity.

Enterprise Search is not enough:
What is really needed for enterprise information sharing?

Noriaki TAKAYAMA

Shibuya-Yasuda Bldg. 9F, 1-8-3 Shibuya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 150-0002 JAPAN

Abstract: As information resources in the enterprise environment are increasing explosively, Enterprise Search is gaining the spotlight. But in the enterprise environment, making scattered information searchable by Enterprise Search is not enough for information sharing. Following two factors are required:
- Library by folder structure
- File viewer
This report explains some ideas for further utilization of Enterprise Search, and enabling technologies for that, based on the difference between the Internet environment and the enterprise environment, and technology trends. This report also includes the success story of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding which implemented Enterprise Search.

Abstract: Natural Language Processing (NLP) has a potentially large influence on the quality of Enterprise Search systems. These technologies enable going beyond simple keyword search and providing a more natural search experience. NLP is a set of technologies that implement linguistic features such as document language identification, tokenization and noun phrase extraction. Integrating these low-level functions into a larger search application enables higher-level functions such as relevance ranking and fuzzy matching. This article provides an introduction to NLP technologies and their relationship to Enterprise Search. Current research in the field will be introduced and its likely effect on the future of Enterprise Search will be inferred.

Report of full-text search using e-commerce search engines
- For the realization of digital library

Shin IRIE

2-15-45 Mita, Minato-ku, Tokyo 108-8345 JAPAN

Abstract: For the realization of digital library, we conducted full-text search experiment for 100,000 books data. We developed the electronic library model including metadata, full-text data and full-text image. Search engines were mainly selected from those using in e-commerce. It is intended to open up new possibility that differ from traditional library systems. Traditional library systems can't handle full-text data, because it is only aimed to manage cataloging data. It is important to evaluate traditional library system with new web technologies, for new services in library will be based on it.

Early days of CAS ONLINE

Soichi TOKIZANE

Abstract: The author spent one year at CAS as an intern sent from JAICI in 1977 and was involved in the early study on structure searching. The principle of structure searching was already known in early 1960s, but practical systems were developed in 1970s after the CAS Registry System was in operation. CAS ONLINE was released in December 1980, which was searchable only by screen numbers. Real structure searching by drawing query structures became possible in December 1981, but using an expensive terminal called HP2647. Soon structure drawing became available for conventional terminals equipped with PLOT-10, and then for PCs with PLOT-10 emulators. ICAS (later VENUS-P) was used to communicate with the host at first. A dedicated line was installed in 1984. It was used to print search results offline, too. CA file, a bibliographic file with abstracts, were added to CAS ONLINE in 1983, and the structure file was named as REGISTRY. Both became a part of STN in 1984.
