Abstract: This article introduced elementary knowledge about software which is provided on the Internet. It classified software into freeware, shareware, Free Software, Open Source Software, and trial software. It explained that a good method of obtaining them was to choose well-known web sites, "Vector" and "Mado-no-mori". It also described how to do download software and the installation for the beginner. At the end, It pointed out the attention when using it in the office.

How to make the illustration manuals with the free software

Abstract: Recently, we are not concerned with to what department it belongs, but it depends for many businesses in a personal computer of ours. The screen shot of a personal computer is required also for sharing of data, or the manual for taking over of business. It is possible to take in a personal computer screen shot now unlike the manual in once paper. But MS Windows's standard tool, only a low manual can do working efficiency and completeness. Free software is easy to introduce, and suitable for such work, there is a thing with the same function as commercial software. I want to introduce the example which makes the illustration manuals using such free software.

It eases some daily work: small and useful freeware

Abstract: I attempt to introduce three freeware with examples of how they are used, which they would be useful for our works. The "Hypertext Screensaver" has a function of display an HTML file as a screensaver, and it is useful for publicity and notice. The "Schedule Board" provides function of schedule management in an organization easily as a groupware. The "BunBackup" make backup operations easy and speedy, with some advanced settings. Each freeware provide very practical uses without charge, so we would utilize them in our works and other situations.

Abstract: I explained rudimentary test processing, conversion with regular expression and conversion from Kanji to Roman alphabet or kana, conversion by use of the correspondence table, that used free software, took "Name identification" work as an example. Abstract: iGoogle is a service that can be customized by matching the Google homepage to your favor. One of the features of iGoogle is that everyone can make the gadget which is built in to the service. Everyone can make it if he/she has basic knowledge of HTML, XML, and javascript. This article explained about the method of making a part of library web page or OPAC to a gadget especially by the knowledge of HTML.

Abstract: This article introduce based on OpenSearch is one of a standard search retrieval protocol between the search engine and aggregator on Web, 1) pick up a minimum necessary element from the standard interface of OPAC and re-composition to the simple one, 2) making of plug-in that retrieves OPAC by OpenSearch Description file from Firefox, 3) introduction to install the retrieval plug-in.

A display of cover image using Amazon Web Services

Abstract: The Amazon Web Services is API that Amazon offers. We can use it in combination with Associates program. By mashing up both these and each library's resource, library's Web Sites have the possibility of creating new services. This article describes, a basic technique, how to show cover images. I program PHP script with open source and explain it. And now there is a situation of the concomitance of ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 about ASIN and ISBN. It explains how to convert and the problem for programming.

The first database service in Japan: research, development and service of TOOL-IR

Abstract: The first Japanese online information retrieval service, TOOL-IR, was started at the Computer Centre, Tokyo University, in July 1975. The sotware was developed by a group headed by the author. Initially it started with CA Condensates database from the Chemical Abstracts Service, and within the fiscal year 1975 Crystallographic Data from Cambridge University and Computer and Control Abstracts were added to the database. The service was used by researchers and graduate students in Japanese universities, colleges and research institutes for over 20 years, usually over 500 active users yearly and at its height over 1500 yearly. In addition tu consideration paid for human-machine interface, TOOL-IR service had features such as suffix-match retrieval, query library shared by the users, private database development support (PDB), and e-mail communication between the service provider and the users. The article traces its inseption, R&D, episodes in early import of database on tape and sketches the development of the service.
