AbstractFThe equipment and the method for the image acquisition from a rare book as a valuable cultural material should be carefully selected, giving the utmost priority to the safety of the material. It is advisable to employ a one-shot photographing method using a camera in order to acquire images for digital facsimiles, because there should be no physical contact between the equipment and the page surface. Such a method is also advantageous in terms of working efficiency to acquire images from hundreds of pages in a volume. In this article, two one-shot photographing methods, the indirect method using photographic films and the direct method using a digital camera, will be briefly explained with some comparisons between them. Some examples of the special devices developed for the digital image acquisition of rare books will also be given.
