Abstract:A main role of library systems changed from management system to access support system. Access support system means an integrated software environment which connects service functions. To realize the system, librarians that can make ideas of library services are required. A system librarian is a creative profession who has viewpoints both service and technology. The system librarian is one of aspect of librarians. Conditions of curriculum to bring up system librarian are comprehension, cross-studying and concurrency. The most important one is concurrency.

Abstract:The work of systems librarian is broad and it is difficult to clarify the definition of systems librarian. First, in this article basic skills for systems librarian are discussed from the authors' experiences. In recent years library has be changed toward service-oriented. Next, several recent library's trends for systems librarian are surveyed, and future roles and skills that will be expected for systems librarian are discussed. It will be required establishing standard roles and skills of systems librarian in future.

Scholarly portal system "PIRKA": A locus of development and dreams

Abstract:In June 1999, Sapporo Medical University Library has started to operate the first interlocking system between different databases in Japan. The system called "PIRKA", named after "pretty" in Ainu, which was modeled after NLM's "IAIMS" and was designed to provide centralized user service and enrich our regional medical treatment services. In July 2002, PIRKA migrated to the next system based on Ex Libris's library portal "MetaLib/SFX". As a result, PIRKA's regional medical treatment services expand throughout Hokkaido area and show importance of the improvement of service quality. This article describes brief overview of scholarly portal system "PIRKA" and how system librarians are involved to the development.

Abstract:Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Information Center in Japan provides various databases such as document information, research result information, and satellite images. This information is provided as an agriculture information resource system so called Agropedia. Also it is broadcasted through the Internet helping the research and development activities related to agriculture, forestry and fisheries. This system has been put into operation for five years. We have realized several problems as follows, (1) Necessity of retrieval function of full text information. (2) Low degree of acknowledgment level due to shortage of announcing to the public. (3) Method of promoting talent. In this text, the current state and the improvement idea of these problems are described from the standpoint of systems librarian involved in the system operation.

Government procurement for information systems

Abstract:The Government of Japan has taken steps to address government-specific issues for procuring cost-effective and high-quality information systems, by governing with the memorandum of agreement on government procurement for information systems (memorandum) which the Government of Japan's Inter-Ministerial Task Force for Information Systems Procurement (Task Force) issued in March 2002, and revised most recently in March 2004.
These approaches may become wide-range solutions for IT systems procurement in any business areas, therefore may be concerns for such staffs as procurement officers. I hope the this paper's challenges are contributive to solutions for your problems.

An introduction to the HUMI Project

Abstract:When Keio University came to possess a copy of the Gutenberg Bible in 1996, the HUMI Project (Humanities Media Interface Project) was launched. They have pursued researches in the field of digital archiving of rare books, and have been committed in digitization of rare books. They have also pioneered "Digital Bibliography" by adopting digital images of rare books into bibliographical research. The present author has devoted himself to practical research and development of digitization in the HUMI Project. In these serialized twelve articles, he will explicate the method of rare book digitization developed by them in the last decade, introduce relevant technologies and case studies of collaborative rare book digitization projects with foreign libraries. In this first article, the story of the advent of the HUMI Project will be introduced and activities will be outlined. Digitization of rare books and its significance will be elucidated and a brief explanation of the Gutenberg Bible, closely related to the HUMI Project, will also be given in this article.

Toward e-journal business:A challenge from Chemical Society of Japan

Abstract:The Chemical Society of Japan, CSJ, launched its own electronic journal service in 2002 using the J-STAGE system. Charge for online starts from 2005 after providing a standard e-journal service with three years' free access. This paper describes the latest status of our journals including the number of access or any change after charge for online, prompt action for OpenAccess, and the necessity of promotional activity for Japanese scholarly publication. Through the experience of our recent achievement, the future of Japanese scholarly publication is also discussed.
