Harumi YAKUSHIIN
(The College of Humanities, Kinjo Gakuin University, 2-1723, Omori, Moriyama-ku, Nagoya 463-8521 JAPAN)

Abstract : The purpose of this paper is to examine the argument about the "subject librarian" who is responsible for the library services in a particular subject field. Some people insist that the subject librarian who has a crucial role to play in the new electronic environment is necessary to be appointed in the Japanese academic libraries in order to meet the various kinds of user needs. And some of them believe that he will enhance the value of the library, and will promote the status of the librarian as a whole. But it seems unlikely that the appointment will contribute directly toward obtaining the nation's recognition as professions, so long as the advanced cases at home and abroad are examined.
