(Information Media Environment Research Group, Major of Urban Informatics, Grad School of Creative City & Media Center, Osaka City University. (3-3-138 Sugimoto, Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka-shi, Osaka-fu 558-8585))

Abstract : This paper summarizes a subject approach to information retrieval. The classification system and subject headings system which are used for subject approach for information retrieval of a bibliography record on the library community are described briefly. Further, the technique by the pre-coordinate system and computer use retrieval system is described. Evaluation of the retrieval result and the problem of the Boolean search strategies are considered.
Finally, this paper surveys theoretical and practical issues associated with the retrieval of multimedia objects, such as sound information, pictorial and animation information.

The subject information retrieval of journal articles : with forcusing on the chemical and medical fields
Takahiro TAKEUCHI
(International Medical Information Center (Shinanomachi Rengakan, 35 Shinanomachi, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0016))

Abstract : To reveal the present state of the information retrieval using journal article databases, the practical problems are discussed with showing concrete examples. The information amouts variety of spelling and expression and computerized processing of Japanese sentenses are cited as the problems for free-term searches in titles and abstracts. Also, as the problems for controlled terms, the necessity of expertise and weak points of Boolean operators are referred. Automatic term mapping system is introduced as an example of the solutions for the easier usage of controlled terms. Finally, as a good example containing those problems, the studies on the practical search for RCT (randomized controlled trial) in Japanese databeses are introduced.

Searching For The Patent Information By The Theme Information ―Concept Searching And Its Limits―
Teruaki TAKAHASHI
(TERU-RESEARCH Co., Ltd (1-3-4-210, Uekoyata, Iruma-Shi, Saitama 358-0027))

Abstract : The review was made as to the difficulties when applying the concept search system in the search for the patent information by the theme information.
Such review was made as to the respective object.
By applying this system, we can easily make the search only by inputting the sentences which have such theme in question. Therefore, it will be possible to resolve the various problems whichwe experienced before in searching for the patent informatino by theme information.
It is said that search related to the patent right is not suitable for the concept search, because the sentences are very complicated which are used in the claims.
However, it will be possible to use this concept search system more effectively in the search related to the patent right, if you develop the search skill to the higher level, and can manage to newly take advantage of the potential function of the concept search system.

Information access behavior of music researchers and music materials
Hitoshi MATSUSHITA
(Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Department of Music, Section of Musicology (12-8 Ueno-Koen, Taito-ku, Tokyo 110-8714))

Abstract : According to the result of survey of investigation of information access behavior among music researchers in 1989, two types of users, a scholar type and a performer type, became clear. And an analysis of OPAC log at the Kunitachi College of Music Library in 2000 clarified, the most frequently used keys are names and titles but hit rate is not necessarily high. It is thought that the cause of low hit rate is in the inconsistency of the users' access behavior to single music work and the catalog basically created per medium.
For a way to solution, the author discusses that 1) create catalog not for a medium unit but a work unit, 2) substantial access controls, such as authority control, 3) development of search engine type OPAC.
