Abstract : gOutline of the National Intellectual Property Strategy" that the Council for Intellectual Property Strategy sponsored by the Japanese Prime Minister recently adopted defined gthe intellectual property" as gproprietary information resulting from the intellectual activities of men and women, and stated that from now on Japan would endeavor to build a new economic and social system and strive to be a leading country based on intellectual property by creating rich intellectual property and protecting and taking the best advantage from the same. In connection with gthe Emission of Information by Information Professionals (Info Pros)" constituting the slogan of the symposium today, the lecturer will report on gthe Preparation of Information" and gHow Information Activities Should Be" taken from the proposals made in the gOutline of the National Intellectual Property Strategy" and the lecturer will talk frankly on his desires for information professionals (Info Pros) based on the past and present real experiences of the lecturer.

Electronic pathfinders : a window to a new generation library service

@Abstract : Library pathfinders have played an important role in reference services for over 40 years in North America. In Japan, they have not so far secured a gplace" in their own right. With the introduction of new technologies and the Internet, library pathfinders may yet to prove their importance here in Japan. They may even become a significant step forward in the designing of glibrary portals and as ga product" of librarianship. In this paper, authors have introduced the concept of library pathfinders and their history and significance as a library tool and also their vision of what our future virtual pathfinders may look like. Authors' experience with the OCLC Connexion Pathfinders (formerly CORC pathfinders) is also introduced. With the technological help and support at the national level, the concept of new library pathfinders, as a new library service, may shed light on many private university libraries that are facing financial difficulties.
