(Chief Social Sciences Cataloging Division, LM527, Library of Congress (Washington, D.C. 20540-4360 USA))

Abstract : Speedy development of technology has great impact upon the functions of libraries. Libraries at present are required, as a part of their ultimate mission, to supply the most appropriate information/resources within the shortest time period, whether inside or outside the library, and regardless of limitation of time and distance. Whether a library can function most effectively to accomplish its mission depends on how efficiently it applies the available technologies especially digital technologies, to its operations. With some examples of the utilization of digital technologies in various fields of library service, this article discusses the issues libraries must consider.
