The Electronic Journal : Lessons from Its Still Short History
Syun TUTIYA
(Faculty of Letters and University Library, Chiba University (1-33 Yaoi-cho, Inage-ku, Chiba-shi, Chiba 263-8522))

Abstract : The rapidly increasing dominance of electronic or online journals in the late 1990s foreshadowed the worldwide change in scholarly communication in the 21th century. The relevant sectors to be involved in Japan made so late a start as to get significantly behind the other parts of the world. This article firstly characterizes the meaning of the electronic journal in both the contexts of the modern scholarly communication since the 19th century and of the birth and development of information and communication technology in the latter half of the 20th century, secondly describes Japan's changing general perception of and attitudes toward those general trends, and thirdly states perspectives and problems in relatively longer terms.

(International Christian University Library (3-10-2 Osawa, Mitaka-shi, Tokyo 181-8585))

Abstract : Academic libraries today make positive efforts to utilize electronic resources. Full-text aggregation databases and electronic journals are provided instead of traditional paper indexes and periodicals. Web-based library online catalog can be integrated with vendors' databases to provide uniform access to various information resources. This article describes a project to extend function of the standard MARC-based library catalog by data linkage to citation data and full text article data
provided by vendors.

Kazuhiro HAYASHI, Tsukasa MONJO
(The Chemical Society of Japan (1-5, Kanda-Surugadai, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 101-8307))

Abstract : This paper describes recent history of journals of Chemical Society of Japan and application study for web journal, including the use of SGML from 1993, release web journal with charge from 1999, and trying to load all journals up on J-STAGE. Authors consider about the management problem of mark-up language, and present TeX-3B2 system as a solution. In addition, authors study the difficulty of web journal with a good business model, considering the potential management difficulty of mark-up language by using a concept of entropy of style and mark-up, which might lead a hi-cost journals with high-charge.

Consideration of efficient macro-analytic method of patent information\Patent Map to have adopted F-term as analytic factors
Teruaki TAKAHASHI
(TERUERESEARCH (1-3-4-210, Uekoyata, Iruma-shi, Saitama 358-0027))

Abstract : It was well known that listed patent map is a useful tool for macro analysis of patent information. With a listed patent map until now, for an analysis of patent information, IPC and FI were used as analytic factors. However, with a method by means of only these analytic factors, an analysis of content was insufficient. A result of a consideration, detailed analysis of content got possible, by using F-term as analytic factors.

Towards a development of information system based on information search processes : investigation of search processes using reference books
Toshitaka WATANABE
(KANSAI University, Faculty of Letters (3-3-35 Yamate-cho, Suita-shi, OSAKA 560-8680))

Abstract : This study explored how 436 students, who attended a librarian's course lecture, search information, using reference books. The following points became clear : (1) with a rate of more than 40%, a very high degree of use of encyclopedia, illustrated books, and dictionaries, could be ascertained. (2) Concerning the actual information search process, students at first often use secondary materials (catalogs, bibliographies and so on), in a second stage, they then use tertiary materials (bibliography of bibliographies), and in a third stage they return to secondary materials again. As a result, the model of the procedures in the information retrieval system, which has reference book data as a source of information, was presented.
