Abstract : Rapid growth of Web resources has increased the need for effective organizational tools for of these. Metadata is regarded as one of the most important tools. There are many kinds of metadata shcemas. Although libraries are not the only institutions of documentation now, the experience and know-hows accumulated by the library community is of great importance. This paper briefly examines several metadata projects, and presents suggestions for how the library community could manage metadata, focusing on the strategic documents of the Library of Congress : “LC21" and the proceedings of “Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium"

Abstract : It is definitely necessary to prepare geographic metadata and clearinghouse in order to stimulate mutual exchanging of geographic data and avoid duplicated investment of data development. Determination of metadata standard and system development for distributed search and retrieval play very important roles to realize clearinghouse preparation. This article describes activities of the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) concerned with discussing metadata standard and applying ISO 23950, which is the international standard of protocol for information retrieval, to metadata search system. We also introduce the clearinghouse gateway developed by GSI based on these standards.

Abstract : A long time has passed since the repository concept was proposed. But there are few cases that
a integrated cooperate repository is used in production systems. Because there were a lot of technical problems to implement such system and “real needs" cannot be found compared with the investment. Recently metadata management is being focused on from a viewpoint of the needs for establishing E-business and data warehousing. In addition new technologies of hardware and software have been developed to implement such system. This paper explains metadata and repository concept first. Next the standardization around metadata and repository will be reported, especially focused on the activity of Object Management Group.

Abstract : A monumental evolution is just about to strike the broadcasting industry from the production to the audience. How can we expect such a technical transition from analog to digital to change broadcasting services ? On the other hand metadata technology is ready for practical use on the World Wide Web, enabling search engines to provide us favorite contents promptly. In the context of such advancement of the Web technology, the possibility of the future of broadcasting services will be discussed and the problems to be solved will be revealed.
